about

Music for piano and biosphere

A timeless natural symphony surrounds us. On Haida Gwaii, sound travels vast distances, revealing intricate details rarely heard in busier places. While out on hikes and soundwalks, I’ve gathered hours of field recordings documenting the Islands’ waterways, forests, birds, weather, and human presence. We Have All the Time on Earth contains many of these recordings. I’ve interwoven the sounds of nature with newly composed piano music created in my Daajing Giids studio.

The piano-only pieces on this album (the first seven tracks) became material used to build the title track, which is also an audio installation I created for the art gallery at Saahlinda Naay (Haida Gwaii Museum). Haida Gwaii-based artist Benedicte Hansen and I collaborated on a show called Life Writ In Water: A Cathartic Movement Through Grief, which opened in September 2023 and gives visitors an immersive experience that visualizes the journey through grief into new life.

When you lend your ear to this piece, you’ll hear the subtle harmonies of insects, the melodic croaking of frogs, the rhythmic cadence of salmon spawning, the rustle of a raven’s wings, the tolling of a church bell, the shuffle of gravel being moved by the tide, and a plethora of other natural instruments woven into this original sonic landscape.

Paying close attention to nature can be daunting. Lately, I’ve been dealing with an overwhelming sense of climate grief. It’s hard to look squarely at the realities of a warming planet and the suffering it brings through extreme weather, heightened fire hazards, displaced communities, and extinctions of species we barely know. It’s even harder to imagine what all this will mean for our children and grandchildren. I’ve noticed that a growing number of individuals share this sense of foreboding, a looming sense of sorrow stemming from impending losses that seem all but inevitable.

Regardless of the source of your grief, my hope is that this music will stand as a comforting companion on your journey into life's embrace.

This season has been marked by many profound challenges on Haida Gwaii, and I want to acknowledge the many that have suffered the loss of dear friends, cherished family, and revered Elders, and the friends and families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit.
